Flooring: The Career You'll Love

We all go through it. Every one of us has or will enter into adulthood, and upon doing so will join the workforce. Excitedly, we step into the role of cashier, barista, intern, or some other entry-level job that gives us the first taste of earning a real wage. All too soon, whether we like our jobs or not, we realize that they take over a LOT of our time. In fact, if you work for just 40 hours a week (and let's be honest, many people work far more than that), you are spending 2080 hours on your job EVERY YEAR! That's crazy!

Those numbers add a new perspective on the word "career". Why on earth would you want to use that much of your time doing something you don't enjoy? Nobody wants to spend 2080 hours of their year in boredom! Right?

At Floor It, we're thankful to be able to say that we don't have to. Each of us has found our own brand of happiness and fulfillment installing floors for our clients. Not all of us grew up dreaming about laying down hardwood floors and carpet, but somewhere along the way we discovered how great this job can be! Now we can't imagine our lives without it!

If you're at the point of life where you're ready to join the working community, or if you're just ready for a career change, take a look at these five reasons to consider a job in flooring:

1. Work/Home Life Balance

It doesn't take extensive observation to realize that the working world is looking more and more to new technology to get anything done. It's pretty amazing to see how computers and machines have made work more portable, more systematic, and more cost effective in many situations. But it also makes, just...more. More work, more stress, more time commitments. After all, it's hard to escape a job that you can take with you. In flooring, you don't have to worry about carrying the workday home. You come to work, get the job done, and leave without a care in the world. Your free time remains yours.

2. Satisfaction on the Job

There's nothing quite so fulfilling as seeing the work of your hands unfold right in front of you. With flooring, you literally get to see and feel your progress as you go about your day. Every completed project brings on a new wave of satisfaction.

In addition to this, you also have the gratification of helping peoples' dreams come to life. You get to go to work knowing that you're turning a family's house into the home they've always wanted, or laying a floor that will complete someone's unique business atmosphere. Watching people get excited over your work is the one of the best parts of this job.

3. Security

Machines can do all kinds of things, but they can't lay a floor the way human hands can. Happily enough, this means that there's always work to be had in the flooring industry. And unlike many other blue-collar jobs, flooring can be done throughout the entire year. The weather doesn't determine our work status. If you become a flooring expert, you won't have to look too hard for work no matter where you go!

4. Health Benefits

No desk-job body for you! Flooring contractors get to move constantly as they lay floors down. Pretty soon you'll begin to notice how your health increases from simply staying active during your work day. You'll feel good and the work hours will pass by quickly thanks to the regular activity.

5. Good Pay

While the pay scale may tilt a little bit depending on where you are and what your experience is, flooring contractors generally get paid pretty darn well. With so many of the "fun jobs" out there paying peanuts, it's refreshing to know that there is still a career that allows you to have your cake and eat it too.

Now that you've looked at some of the benefits, what do you think? Have we piqued your interest?

As mentioned above, this job may not be for everyone, and that's okay. We just know from our own experience how rewarding it is and wanted to share that with all of you. If you DO think that flooring might be a good match for you, give us a call! We're always on the lookout for eager learners around here and would love to talk to you.
