Melted Candy: Summer Cleaning Series

If there was a food that embraced the spirit of summer perfectly, it would have to be candy. Candy is just the perfect combination of color, zest, sweetness, and whimsy, and we love it! There is no better treat to take you back to your childhood and the fun that you had back then.

To the chagrin of many parents, the delightful sugary treats you buy at the candy store do not mix well with the heat of summer. Just a few minutes in the sun and whatever surface that piece of bubblegum or lollipop is sitting on is a goner. Now you're left with figuring out how to clean the slimy remains of the mess. It's not a fun job, and certainly not for the faint of heart, but one that can be accomplished with a bit of help from us!

If you spot candy on the carpet, don't run for the scissors!

It seems like a few snips with your scissors may be the best way to solve a melted problem on your carpet, but that is a drastic solution that is rarely necessary. Before you reach for your shears, try this:

1. Put a few ice cubes in a plastic bag and run them over the offending candy until it has hardened.

2. Using a butter knife or scraping tool, gently peel as much candy off your carpet as possible and throw it away.

3. Vacuum over the area to remove any remaining particles before sponging the spot with a sponge or cloth dampened with warm, soapy water.

4. Using a dry cloth, pat the spot until the area is dry.

Now if you're wondering what to do if you find candy on any non-carpet surfaces, the process is pretty much the same. You just have to be more careful with hardwood so as not to scratch the finish. But with a little patience and perseverance, that candy doesn't stand a chance.
