4 Things to Toss Before Spring Cleaning

Now that Michigan is finally starting to act like spring, it's time to breakout everything you need to do some tidying up! Nothing feels better than walking into an organized and freshly cleaned home. However, you should check your cleaning supplies before you get to work. Not every product out there is particularly good for you or for your hardwood floor. Here are a few that you should stay away from:

1. Ammonia

Ammonia is a powerful product that has been used on floors for as long as we can remember, but it should not to be used on hardwood floors. The harsh chemical will absolutely destroy your floor's finish, stripping years off of its lifespan.

2. Store-bought cleaners

It is tempting to just pick up some hardwood cleaner from the grocery store while you're shopping, but you have to be careful. Many store-bought cleaners wear down the top coat of your floor over time if used consistently. We recommend using a professional-grade cleaner like Bona hardwood floor cleaner.

3. Wet mop

Though timeless in the cleaning industry, wet mops are not an ideal staple for cleaning hardwood floors. Homeowners who use them often use them when they are far too wet. The excess water will not only harm your floor's finish, but the wood boards themselves. We're talking cupping, warping, and discoloration. Yikes!

4. Vinegar

Finally, the favorite all-natural favorite of so many homeowners. Vinegar mixtures can be used to clean just about every surface in the home, but it is important that hardwood floors stay off that list. The acidic nature of vinegar will lead to some nasty etching in your boards.
